Winner of Canada's Baking & Sweet Show 2011

How I started with cake pops back in 2011...

If anyone knows me well, they know that I'm a woman of all trades. I've tried it all, except stick to it! I got bored quickly and loved trying new things that usually required hands on. There's a huge list but that's a whole other story. One day in Chapters bookstore, I walked by a book called Cake Pops by Bakerella. I picked it up, glanced quickly through it and bought the book. It looked easy enough to try in a day. When I got home, I followed the instructions from the book and created my first batch of cake pops. I thought they looked okay for the first time. They were a little messy but tasted pretty good! The next step was to get honest opinions from my family and sure enough, great feedback! They loved the whole idea of eating cake on a stick and with no mess, knives or forks needed.

Looking at my cake pop pictures today, compared to my very first cake pops I made, I can't believe the difference. But with practice, time and  a lot of patience, they got better with taste and design. I've tried different recipes, chocolate coating and different techniques of making a cake pop until I got it right. There were moments when I wanted to toss in the towel because something wasn’t working for me but in the end, it worked out. Trial and error, lots of it! Not to mention that I can be a perfectionist at times and what was a minor detailed mistake to me was not important or noticed by others. Through word of mouth, the orders started coming in for all different occasions. Communions, baby showers, birthdays and weddings! The most rewarding part of making cake pops, are the compliments I get after the order is complete, delivered and eaten!  The ideas are endless when it comes to making cake pops for your party theme and event!

Winning Canada's Baking & Sweets Show 2011

One of the highlights in my life took place on October 2nd 2011. Canada's Baking & Sweets Show at the International Centre was the first show that I participated at over a 3-day weekend. I must admit that I was very hesitant on doing the show and had no idea what to expect. I didn't know where to start or how to prepare myself. I had just started making cake pops earlier that year for close friends and family. Cake pops were and still are very new here in Canada but very big in the United States. I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into this time as I've tried many things in life and gave up on many things as well.

I decided to enter the contest for best lollycake at Canada's Baking & Sweets Show 2011.
I was hoping for the win but really wasn't expecting it because I truly was a beginner at making cake pops. I worked on 3 identical turkey cake pops for three amazing judges and one being "Buddy Valastro" Cake Boss, who made the final decision. Buddy announced my name and talked about my turkey like it was the cutest cake pop along with tasting great!
I was more nervous running up stage to greet him then walking down the aisle on my wedding day! I couldn't even tell you for sure if I cursed while up there with Buddy but I know I said something like, "Thanks Buddy, I'm shakin' like a @%#$# turkey right now!"
I gave him a hug and thanked him for the win. That truly was an amazing experience in my life. I was so glad that after all the craziness building up to that day in preparation that it all worked out in the end. I made over 1000 cake pops for the show and sold every single one! I spoke to many people and gained many great friendships from other vendors.

Keeping busy today...

I'm definitely not bored and love experimenting with new designs and flavours. All cakes are baked fresh from scratch with added homemade buttercream or ganache. I'm baking, rolling, dipping and detailing all the time. Did I mention I'm going to be a mom of three soon! Yup, after my win from Buddy, my body must of been really relaxed because BAM! I got pregnant! While being very much entertained already with my 6-1/2 year-old daughter and 4-year-old son, I now will be rocking my 3rd baby with my foot while creating cake pops with my hands! Thinking I'm going to be one great Cake Bomb Mom if I can keep up with this one! Wish me luck! God knows I’m going to need it!

The winning turkeys!
